For the sake of the argument say a pint is a fiver and the vodka is a tenner. If they stayed on their own, after 4 drinks the lad on the pints would have spent 20 quid and the lad on vodka 40 quid. If they do 2 rounds each, that’s 30 quid each so the lad on the vodka has saved himself a tenner and had his drinks subsidised by his mate…

If your drink is considerably more expensive you have to pick up more rounds. The idea of rounds is based on the fact that at the end of the night everyone has spent about the same amount of money.
