🚨 Thierry Henry on Michael Olise and Lamine Yamal’s Ballon d’Or debate: “I was looking at Lamine Yamal’s performances the other day, and I thought, this is ridiculous. Not ridiculous in a bad way. Ridiculous because of how consistently good he is. Barcelona played Getafe, he didn’t score, he only had an assist, and he still finished as one of the best players on the pitch. So I went back through his recent matches. Goal. Assist. Two assists. Another goal. Another brilliant performance. I kept scrolling. At some point I said to myself, ‘Okay, I understand. I understand why Barcelona supporters want this boy to win the Ballon d’Or.’ And listen, I played for Barcelona. I know what it means when a young player comes through and starts doing things that make the whole stadium stand up. Yamal deserves every bit of that excitement. But then somebody asked me a question. ‘Thierry, have you looked at Michael’s numbers?’ I said, ‘Michael who?’ ‘Olise.’ I laughed. ‘Of course I know Michael. I coached him with France.’ ‘No, Thierry. Have you looked at his last 10 games?’ So I opened them. And I stopped laughing. I looked at his performances for Bayern. Then I looked at what he had been doing for France. Against Union Berlin, a goal and three assists. Against Bodø/Glimt, a goal and two assists. Two goals and an assist against Belgium for France. And these weren’t isolated performances. He kept appearing everywhere. I went back to Yamal’s page. Then back to Michael’s. Then I put the phone down. Because now I had a problem. You see, I remember Michael when I coached him with the French Olympic team. He was a quiet boy. Not somebody who needed to tell everybody how talented he was. Sometimes in training he’d do something with the ball and I’d look at him. ‘Michael, why didn’t you try that earlier?’ He’d just smile. I remember telling him, ‘You have to understand something. You can decide football matches. Don’t wait for somebody else to give you permission.’ And that is what I love about watching him now. He’s not simply a player who can produce a beautiful moment. He’s becoming somebody who gives you a beautiful moment, then another one, then another one, until you start expecting it. That’s a different level of responsibility. Now, people will say, ‘Thierry, Yamal is younger.’ Of course he is. And what he’s doing at his age is extraordinary. But the Ballon d’Or isn’t an award for who has the most extraordinary future. It’s about what you’re doing now. And if you’re asking me to compare two players who are producing world-class performances almost every time they step onto the pitch, I’m not going to ignore Michael because the other boy is younger or gets more attention. I know Barcelona supporters won’t enjoy hearing that from me. But I can’t tell them to look at Yamal’s last 10 games and then tell everybody else not to look at Olise’s. That wouldn’t be fair. Somebody asked me afterwards, ‘So you’ve changed your mind?’ I said, ‘No. I still think Yamal has a fantastic case.’ ‘Then what’s changed?’ ‘I’ve realised he isn’t the only one.’ And that’s the difficult part for Lamine. He’s doing almost everything you could possibly ask of a young footballer. Unfortunately for him, there’s a Frenchman in Munich who seems to have received the same instructions.” [ this is the source @ChinoUTD ]#lamineyamal #olise #barcelona #creatorsearchinsights #capcut
