@holvek: Buran was the Soviet reusable orbital spacecraft developed as part of the "Energia-Buran" program to match the American Space Shuttle. It made its single, triumphant spaceflight on November 15, 1988, completing two orbits around Earth and executing a flawless landing at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in fully automatic mode under the control of its onboard computer — a historic milestone that remains an unmatched global record. The 36.4-meter-long orbiter, with a launch mass of up to 105 tons, was designed for a crew of up to 10 people, protected by over 38,000 unique thermal tiles, and launched into orbit by the ultra-powerful Energia rocket. Regrettably, due to the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the ensuing economic crisis, the program was officially canceled in 1993, and the only flight-proven spacecraft was completely destroyed in 2002 during a hangar roof collapse, leaving behind only a few test models that now serve as museum exhibits. #ussr #sovietunion #engineering #education
