Deer act very different from elk. Elk you almost always have to catch at first light or in the evening. Something like 90% of deer are harvested after 10:00 am. Those that get their deer before then are usually kicking them out of bed. Look for combinations of three basic things: food, water, and concealment. If you can find an oak stand at the edge of a thicket near a water source, stop and glass it. Take your time with it because they will hold tight when they are under pressure from hunters. If you are both hunting, have one watch while the other circles around to the side and walks through the thicket. Two people looking from different angles have a better chance than two people looking from the same angles.

Find TheGuide970, he has great content. My daughters and I rank glassing as number one, pay attention to the wind and keep it in your face. In the mornings it will be one way, as it warms it will change. If you aren’t seeing them you may be moving too much or not paying attention to the wind enough. We volunteer guide kids and parents, so we have tried different styles. We have had great guides and mentors in Colorado, Idaho, South Africa and West Texas. Too much movement and being scented are the top reasons for not seeing anything. They are sneaky!

21 years in a row killing a Algara and sometimes multiple states the biggest thing is scouting. You don’t have to see the animals but look for the tracks same with deer. I’m not a huge deer hunter, but it’s tracks rubs and scrapes.

I hunt for a living I’d be happy to share a few tips if you guys want to reach out. If you’re seeing people take them out of the same areas you are hunting you are obviously in the right places. Just might change a few things and be golden.

There is no substitute for time in the woods. I was blessed to spend alot of time in the woods hunting, trapping and logging. Time in the woods or on the mountain is invaluable. Just watching glassing shed hunting it's all teaching moments . Be patient & enjoy your time on the mountain together.

Experience is the best teacher. Take years even growing up hunting with experienced people.

Western hunting is mostly spot and stalk. Being able to cover the most ground with both your feet and eyes will give you the best chance for success. And when you get into elk or deer be patient and slow.

You won’t always be successful, consistency and always going back year after year is what makes you better. It’s more mental then anything.

My opinion is to choose units you know have animals and spend every minute you can scouting/hunting. When everyone else goes home you stay out, just being where they are is huge. When you are consistently there you pick up on patterns and habits. Goodluck

Hike deep stay away from roads, if you see people your in the wrong area I hike in 10-15 miles solo and set base camp for a few days, find a high ridge and just glass for hours, find burns and just glass, practice long range shot if ur up high you probably going to be taking 500yrd minimum shot, put in tons of effort you have to really want it, i put in over 150 miles this season hiking deep looking for a monster trophy buck

Get just a little bit farther away from the roads then most are willing to go. All things being equal, animals will settle into the places where humans are not pressuring them. Gotta hike.

I’d consider my self a good hunter I guess and also from the great state of Utah👍sounds like you are into the right places, where there is small bucks and bulls there is big bucks and bulls. Glassing is my best method success,a good set of binoculars but a spotting scope is a must for producing big animals, also LUCK is huge, I’ve packed in miles, backpacked into places not see a shooter buck, and on the way driving out kill a 4 point off the side of the road.

Be in the woods, have gun, cover ground, glass from high places, never forget the wind, don’t stay where they ain’t. That about covers it.
