Evil Lizzie McGuire :
That’s how abusive parents really are. They love you, they sometimes stand up for you when no one else is on your side, it’s realistic but they are still monsters.

She really had me conflicted because she advocated for her daughter in ways I wish more parents did but it was for selfish reasons 😩

That's what made her more scary than the original for me. She wasn't a zealot, but represented this new kind of fringe "believer". She loathes the outside world, but knows exactly how to navigate it to push her ideas. In the same vein she could come across as a mother willing to fight for her child, while in reality working against her daughter's sense of agency. In the original she was pretty much a social outcast who set her daughter up for failure. In this one she's a contrarian who could, in theory, perfectly prepare her daughter for the world but consciously decides not to. It isn't malice but something a bit more unsettling and familiar.

This version is a great example for moms whose children are no contact.

Every single character was written, cast and played SO well. I’m 100% going to watch it again!

It felt so real to my abuse and made it hit so much harder for me. Because yeah most abusive parents love their kids in whatever way they’re capable of, and that makes the abuse so much harder to deal with. And there are so many people in my life I wish I could view as one dimensional monsters because it would make it so much easier if I could just hate them. So I was THRILLED with this take and being able to see that dynamic play out

I saw Mike saying that Margaret was actually his way into this version of Carrie, because his son was about to start high school and Mike was anxious about all the bad shit at high schools you see in the news, and he decided to channel that into a new spin on Carrie and Margaret as a character (while still keeping her clearly abusive and bigoted, he wanted her fear for her daughter to feel grounded in the real fears parents face)

i was so angry at those moments when I did agree with her because I didnt want to ever agree with Margret White. She was so realistic!

Tragic :
People who hate the characterisation in the new series lowkey just hate to see any kind of nuance in these traditionally “evil” characters, the original film adaptation is incredible but it and other film adaptations have made the villains of the story so comedically evil and unlikeable that they’re kinda jarring 😭

I like how Mike played with having this actress portraying Margaret White. because you're expecting Bev from Midnight Mass and then get slapped in the face with such a nuanced realistic depiction of an abusive overbearing mother

it's been so interesting watching my partner have this Margaret white as their only reference point, and watching them be conflicted on agreeing with her about the shooter drills (we live in Canada if that's a real drill I am horrified)

I’ve only seen the first two episodes, but I don’t see her as too far as a stretch from the novel, yes there has been more stuff added but it’s modernised. But I love the house is stuck in the 70s, it retained her whole home life from the book, but bought the bullying into the modern age

honestly, I prefer it to the straight up, cartoon villain level evil she's been in the past. I LOVE Piper Laurie and the original Carrie movie is always going to be iconic, but this Margaret was more fun to watch

It’s giving controlling mama bear. She goes full Karen when she needs to be. It’s messy.

This just solidified my confidence to not watch it. My mom really loves Carrie’s mom. She would quote her mom unironically and laugh at those scenes.

I love this version of her because she presents as an odd but generally GOOD MOTHER. She's every bit the controlling religious freak King wrote and Piper Laurie showed us, but this Margaret is also VERY REALISTIC. My husband almost couldn't watch the show because he was so triggered by the similarities with his first wife--who killed their 16yo son and herself because he was beginning to assert his independence from her. In the multipage screed she left behind, she insisted she was saving him from a demonic world

samantha sloyan is an absolute national treasure btw, i still think about her performance in midnight mass every day. i have never had such a visceral reaction to her character, bev, i feel like we all know a bev and she delivered that perfectly, almost too well.
