Adultery is the only biblical way out of a marriage. Even then, repentance and forgiveness can heal. Abandonment is the second but also says to be reconciled if the abandoning spouse returns. We live in a world that glamorizes divorce without realizing the true trauma that comes with it. Again, yes, I’m aware it’s not possible in all cases. Physical abuse, substance abuse, etc, are real issues that hurt people and lines have to be drawn. “My husband didn’t give me enough attention, he’s controlling, we don’t get along, etc,” is more what I’m talking about. The toxic “I deserve to happy” clan isn’t taking marriage seriously and it’s a problem. We aren’t called to be happy. We are called to be Holy. We have made it too easy to blow up someone else’s life, selfishly. Typically, the people doing this aren’t taking ownership in their own part of the relationship falling apart. They then, carry that into their next relationship. That’s why so many second marriages fail. Trust me, I know it’s not easy. I’ve been there. I left my first marriage believing the lies of the enemy and society. I had never believed in divorce before. I had EVERY reason to leave at the time. I asked for change for two years that never came, so I left. Nothing was changing my mind. I moved out and started moving on with my life. Thank God for one friend who I didn’t even know very well at the time, told me everything I DID NOT want to hear. It changed the trajectory of my future. She said “just from what I know of you, in 20 years, if you look back, you will be grateful you kept your family together.” It almost knocked the breath out of me. I was mad. I was justified in leaving. I went home a few weeks later. He stepped up to fix the things that needed to be done. We had two more children. He passed away a few years later but I was able to live out my vows. I will forever be grateful and proud of that. My marriage now has unfortunately been turbulent. I filed for divorce twice even though I didn’t want to. We lost a child. Statistically most marriages don’t make it through that. I held on as long as I could to work through things but filed when I had biblical ways out. I had to protect myself even if it was excruciating. Within weeks, the whole situation changed. I had to decide if I would cancel the divorce and reconcile. I put it on hold and had very clear limits on what I was willing to work with. Every single condition was met and then some. I still can’t believe the difference in mindset now. My husband is the precious man I knew he was. It was just an unbearable season. We are fully restored for over a year and now have another child. I didn’t think it was possible to get here but God said otherwise. I could have continued with the divorce. Most, honestly, ANYONE else would have. I had prayed and had a mustard seed of faith (through signs from God that he would restore. I’ll share about that later) so I gave the opportunity to see what could happen. I’m so grateful I did. This man and this marriage are everything I prayed for, through those hard years. There is more honor in working through it together, versus walking away. It doesn’t make you a doormat. It’s harder to fix things than to start over, but it’s worth it. I pray for any of you dealing with this, to focus on what the Lord believes about marriage, and not what the world does. People are human and they fail us. It doesn’t mean they can’t be redeemed. #marriage #divorce #husbandandwife #reconciliation #marriagerestoration
