@fightblindness: Watching someone you love experience vision loss can shape the way you see the world. Growing up, Maggie saw firsthand how her mom’s experience with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) can affect not only the person living with it, but the people and families around them. Today, Maggie uses her voice to raise awareness, support research, and help families affected by blinding diseases feel less alone. This #BlindnessAwarenessMonth, #ShareYourVision and tell us how vision loss has affected you or someone you love. www.FightingBlindness.org/ShareYourVision Video Description: Maggie sits against a blue backdrop, sharing her story with vision loss as someone who has family affected by RP. The video concludes with the Foundation Fighting Blindness logo.

What RP? Don’t assume we will all know this short form. I don’t.

This runs in my family. My grandfather, 3 aunts, 5 cousins and some 2nd cousins. I've grown up watching how this progresses and its an awful condition.

I have RP and one of the most frustrating thing I have to deal with is explaining my vision and the way I see the world to others,

RP is also used for relapsing polychondritis. Abbreviations are never good for external communications.

I hate that my wife is going blind. She loves life and I can’t do anything to help her. I’ve seen her be injected in the eyes more than 40 times. We r so depressed and our life sucks for so many reasons. We need a change.

I was never tested , so that leaves it up to my daughter to do the genetic testing . Really hard here in Manitoba . First Dr said she had never even heard of it 🤨? This one is making commmenta about her age and there is time sort of commmets !! 27 !! They are discussing children !! I didn’t test because I never would have gotten pregnant . Watching it happen slowly since toddler to my older brother . His horrid life . Nope . But I tell ya a bully better not even with me or mine . I have had much practice 😞

My dad and my uncle both have RP. We have grown up with their struggles. There are a lot of amazing people who see and help, but there are also a lot of others who refuse to. People just need to be more aware of others around them instead of just themselves.

My dad has retinal pigmentosis. He struggles with acceptance due to his low vision. He started using a cane so people around him will know he is low vision and be more empathetic. He used to get yelled at a lot for being in the way and not reacting to peoples hand gestures and facial expressions.
