Then PAs shouldn't exist bc they don't have any bedside experience

I hate it here :
Physician here. I was a medic for 20 years before I went to medical school. I wholeheartedly agree that advanced practice nursing is overdue for some regulatory control. The whole purpose behind advanced practice programs was to take experienced nurses and fill in the gaps in knowledge to become independent clinicians. Now, more often than not, it is people who have less than two years of clinical experience in these programs because they want to fill seats, and they’re producing people who do not have enough education or experience to do the job safely. So without requiring a residency in the same way that medicine does, this is a recipe for disaster.

I had a nursing student on my unit talking about how the program she’s in is a 2 in 1 bsn to np program. So she entered school not being a nurse and will graduate as a NP. I had to just keep my thoughts to myself 😭

I wish psych np programs required real psych nursing experience. So tired of nurses going to for psych NP because they think they’ve taken care of psych patients in the ED or ICU. IT’S VERY DIFFERENT!!

I also think before you can be a nurse manager of any kind you should have to have 10 years of bedside experience.

YES. WHY ARE SCHOOLS ACCEPTING NEW GRADS INTO THEIR NP PROGRAMS?! 😩 like not even graduated, but already accepted into an NP program??????

not that i disagree, but I struggle to see how irl NP programs (not online) with a NP student without experience would differ from like a PA program, do you feel this would be the same?

I will also say that too many nurses are seeking out "easy programs" to meet their end goal, when those programs end up doing little to nothing to actual ADVANCE their PRACTICE.

This shouldn’t be a hot take but gosh people hate to hear this. Been an NP for 9 years, was an RN for 6 years before even starting, and even then I probably could’ve had more experience to be ready.

I know a girl from my high school who went and got her BSN and didn’t work as a nurse and went straight to NP school. She bragged about not having to do bedside. Girl what. I’m just like if you were the NP I’m working with and you have no background to understand where I’m coming from - how is the patient going to get proper care.

Also you should have experience in the NP specialty you’re going into. Why the hell is someone who has only worked in the Cath lab and aesthetics going for psych np???

Becoming a NP fresh outta nursing school then also wanting independence is absolutely crazy

I have had so many people tell me I should get my NP. I definitely will but want at least 5 years of bedside experience first (have a little over 3 years currently). I want a strong foundation to pull from.

As a profession, nursing is wayyyy too loose. The professional organizations aren’t doing a darn thing to uphold the integrity of the profession. I went to a brick and mortar NP program after 14 years of acute & critical care

agreed, same way medical residencies last 4-7 years, nurses should have 4-7 years experience before pursuing a masters or doctorate. btw not comparing residencies to NP programs, ik theres a difference between the medical and nursing models, but i think that the experience matters for both roles especially when doctors and NP’s work together

Yes, you should have at least 5-7 years experience (an expert nurse) before you are practicing as an APRN.

You should have to have 5 years - in the speciality you want to practice in.

NP for 18 years, RN for 4 years before that. I agree with you wholeheartedly. I precept a lot for the local FNP program and you can totally tell the ones with bedside experience from the others

This is a hill I will die on. NP programs are designed for experienced nurses ONLY. Want to go straight through? Be a PA their curriculum is designed for that and they have much more rigorous standards. Seriously if you look at the curriculum side by side it’s scary the difference.

This! It really concerns me that people are not getting experience first. I recommend at least five years. They are going to harm their patients with their lack of knowledge and they’re not going to be held accountable for it.

I’ve been in NP school part time for around 4 years now and it’s all been online. There’s no other way I could have had access to this path as a single mom if I had to attend classes in person and also maintain my full time job. I’ve been a nurse for 13 years in various roles. We need better pathways for achieving NP qualifications while ensuring we can still maintain our ability to pay the bills. But we cannot even get this administration to recognize our profession as legitimate enough to warrant student aid.
