@silk.echo.jp: Seven Kabuki Actors (descriptive title), signed by Utagawa Kunimatsu, was made in 1882 during Japan’s Meiji period. This three-sheet colour woodblock print presents seven performers in elaborate costumes and armour, with vivid reds, blues and intricate patterns conveying the spectacle of kabuki theatre. Their exaggerated expressions and dramatic poses evoke the intensity of a performance, while inscriptions identify the actors and their roles. Belonging to the tradition of yakusha-e, or actor prints, the work reflects the close relationship between ukiyo-e publishing, theatrical entertainment and the celebration of popular performers.
