We've all heard the saying that people who suffered from "flu" frequently since childhood may develop premature graying of their hair. Interestingly, there may be some truth behind the observation but perhaps not for the reason we think. What people call "frequent flu" may sometimes actually be recurrent allergic rhinitis or asthma, conditions associated with chronic immune dysregulation and inflammation. Chronic inflammatory and oxidative stress may affect the melanocytes and melanocyte stem cells within the hair follicle, eventually reducing their ability to produce melanin and contributing to premature graying. So, while childhood flu itself has NOT been proven to cause gray hair, the connection between chronic inflammation, oxidative stress and premature hair graying is biologically plausible.
