@whywewant: Autistic and getting older? We're the first generation to do it diagnosed, and nobody's drawn the map yet. A University of Manchester team asked 121 autistic adults, aged 18 to 88, what would help them age well. A second study of 432 people aged 40 to 93 found autistic participants' sensory differences got harder across adulthood, and so did coping with them. Everything we build to get by is control over our environment, and ageing is when that control gets handed to someone else. What would you fight hardest to keep? #actuallyautistic #autisticadults #latediagnosed #neurodivergent #ageing
Your not serious of course we are not the only autistic people to ever get old generations have gone before us and many of us are already older

I'm making sure my kids have safeguarded money. that's all I can do when I'm not around. I've tried to teach them how to take care of each others deficits because our services in the UK have shown it doesn't care...not unless you have money. I've encouraged them to foster their limited circle of friends because they're also there for you to lean on. I won't be here forever. and I have my own needs. the biggest problem I ever had was trying to get the system to work. so I've been trying to plan for them not to rely on it if it's possible..and yes primarily that's money independence

My (AuDHD) biggest concern getting older is my kids, no shocker there. There are both autistic with mid-high care needs. They are 15&16 ATM, I'm hoping that over the next few years we can find ways for them to become a little more independent.
But as for thinking about what I need in old age, some peace would be good.

we're going to be the first *diagnosed* cohort in elderly care. there's millions of them already, like my grandpa who functions and is independent but is overwhelmed by visitors and retreats to his loft with his beloved train set

We’re less likely to live long enough to become old. So the glass is half full.

I worked in a nursing home kitchen and my biggest concern going into a nursing home is the lack of control or options for my food. Maybe a silly thing but it is legitimately my biggest concern is not liking the food and not having options for alternatives that i would want, not what the kitchen chooses to provide.

Im NOT going into a care home, it would cause too much daily distress! I have though bought a smaller home with all necessities on the first floor which is almost already paid off at 32 and we are both investing heavily in retirement to where we’ll have in-home care once needed.

I won't let it reach the point where I'm no longer in control of having my sensory needs met, that's for sure. imagining myself old and feeble and probably suffering from dementia and being forced, however benign, to wear certain materials, sit under fluorescent lights, not have immediate access to sound dampening or my comfort items... yeah. I'm not doing that.

People do know there have always been autistic people? They just weren't diagnosed for older generations but they had all the same needs as people with a duagnosis

38 now and the sensory issues definitely got worse over time, more responsibilities also cost more energy so that got worse too but in exchange I learned to accept myself more and mask less so that improved my energy in and after social situations

I do not want to get an autism diagnosis. It would just close a door for me being able to sign a private supplementary long-term care policy to cover my inpatient care due to old age.
