@south.signal: In the middle of the Greenland Ice Sheet, hundreds of miles from civilization, sits an abandoned American military base. And I got to explore it. DYE-2 was built in 1959 as part of the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line, a network of radar stations designed to detect Soviet bombers approaching North America during the Cold War. The station housed around 20–30 people at a time, living and working in almost complete isolation on top of the ice sheet. It had sleeping quarters, a kitchen, recreation rooms, radar equipment, and everything else needed to survive in one of the most inhospitable places on Earth. When advances in satellite technology made the station obsolete, it was abandoned in 1988. Much of the equipment, furniture, and personal belongings were simply left behind. Walking through it nearly 40 years later was one of the strangest experiences of my life. Dark corridors, abandoned machinery, old electronics, furniture, and decades-old reminders of the people who once lived there. It felt like stepping into a vault from Fallout. A post-apocalyptic time capsule, frozen in the middle of nowhere. The craziest part is that the ice sheet has continued moving and accumulating snow around the station.
