@playtolearnps: Sometimes the simplest materials are the BEST fine motor tools! Eye droppers are one of our favorite things to add to preschool activities because they give those little hand muscles such a good workout. Every time a child squeezes the dropper, releases it to suck up the liquid, and squeezes again to let it out, they’re strengthening the small muscles in their hands and fingers. They’re also practicing the coordination and finger control they’ll eventually need for holding a pencil, drawing, and writing. And here’s the really good part: Using an eye dropper encourages children to coordinate their thumb, index, and middle fingers. These are the same three fingers used in a mature tripod pencil grasp! Of course, preschoolers don’t need to be sitting at tables practicing pencil grips all day. They need lots of playful opportunities to develop hand strength, coordination, and control. For this activity, we simply offered red and yellow liquid watercolors, eye droppers, and paper towels. The children experimented with squeezing, dripping, watching the colors spread, and discovering what happens when red and yellow mix. A little science, a little art, a LOT of fine motor practice. Just add droppers! Comment DROPPER if you’d like this link to more pictures: https://playtolearnpreschool.us/paper-towel-painting/
