As an elementary teacher, I was so disappointed when my school didn't find a new computer specials teacher after ours retired. Our standardized tests are on line and the kids are expected type their writing portion of those tests. Everyone is up in arms that kids do poorly on writing, but it is more a typing test than a writing test. We have them hand write it before, but they get so bogged down with the typing, they type something different than they wrote on the paper. We need to bring back our specials Computer class to teach typing, basic Word processing skills, slide presentation skills, and computet/online citizenship skills. My kids' school gave pads up to 8th grade, then gave MacBooks for High school. But they don't give them at least a semester class in how to use it. Two days in their homeroom. My daughter used to get so mad at her friends because they didn't know how to do anything properly on their computers. But no one ever taught them and they did not have a computer at home. My kids grew up using a computer. We didn't get tablets or a phone until high school.

Districts made the mistake of equating digital native with digitally proficient.

So when you were talking about basics I thought you were talking about family and consumer education, sewing, cooking, etc… I think I feel old and I’m only 33 (I did have a keyboard class in school to lol)

SAY IT LOUDER! I taught Computer Science in K12 for over 15 years and now I teach undergrads. I had to update my curriculum after Covid bc I was getting blank documents. I had to teach file management. I went rogue and kept typing instruction in my class after it was removed from the district curriculum. “Digital Native” is a misnomer. We all grew up riding in cars, but still had to be taught to drive and get a license

Google coming in and providing schools with cheap tech is also a real problem because they only learn Google and prefer it and the real world runs on Microsoft and they have no idea how to use Outlook, Word and PowerPoint

A lot of schools got rid of technology classes because kids will “just learn it in classes” I’m lucky enough to be teaching the technology class in my district and it helps. State testing is also all on computers, which is one of the reasons the writing portion is so long. Kids can’t type unless they’re explicitly taught and practice it.

Early Gen Z here... I feel like they taught us how to do things, then suddenly started assuming that our knowledge came from the womb & removed that scaffold. Please, we can't be tech support for the older AND the younger generations 😭😭

Our school added a Google Essentials and Keyboarding class to the encore rotation in the middle school. The kids are learning so much!

We assume that because Gen Z is always on social media they are “digital natives” who automatically know how to do all these things. They don’t. They’re great with social media and making/editing videos. But everything else they need to be taught.

in Jr high i switched from resource English to mainstream... i missed the section where they taught what "double spacing" a paper meant. I handed in 3 papers where I went through and hit the space bar twice between each word before anyone realized I didnt know what they meant

I had a law school intern tell me they couldn’t figure out copy and paste so they were just retyping entire contracts by hand. I asked if they had a computer class in school and they said they had a programming class, but no one ever told them they’d have to use Microsoft so much.

they spent a mere 2 days teaching typing in about 4th grade, and then equal to a semester of 9th grade (2 times daily for 1 quarter), they did similarly with my youngest sister who had a different elementary teacher for this, she was taught a variant for smaller hands at that time which resulted in Point deductions when she got that class at the high school level

Also they need to be taught how to organize their digital files. Folders for a year, then each class with subfolders for each class. When can/should you delete older files?

They cannot type or troubleshoot. The districts handed them Chromebooks and iPads and they do not know. We went back to handwriting everything because they also DO NOT KNOW how notebook paper works. 🤦🏾‍♀️

Welp. I taught a grade 6 digital literacy class that was typing, word processing, and digital citizenship. But funding changed. Now I’m teaching grade 7 “career tech education”. And no one is teaching grade 6 computers now! Basically, I’m trying to play catch up and do it all. It’s not good 😭
