To be fair, the Salamanders withdrawal to a "could have happened" defensive position cost them their only chance to slay the warboss...which was also their ONLY chance to drive the Orks back and possibly save the city of Helsreach. The Salamanders cost them their own chance at survival. As a result, Grimaldus and Andrej were about the only ones left alive.
