@therapywithada: It’s common for these all to be concerns, and I am qualified to a certain extent but if it’s the *main* thing bringing you to therapy or it’s severe, it’s best for the client to see someone specialized in these areas! #therapist #emdrtherapist
Exactly. I had a therapist who would cry EVERY SINGLE TIME we discussed my childhood trauma. I felt it was extremely inappropriate.

wouldn't it technically be unethical for you to work with any of those people, so it's not just that you won't work with them it's that you shouldn't be? The first three are not within your scope of practice and the last one is a conflict of interest? I'm currently in grad school and that's what we are being taught.

Louder for the people in the back!! As a therapist, I get so concerned when a therapist is a “generalist” and sees anyone under the sun!

omg THANK YOU for referring people with OCD out. i have had so much of time wasted by therapists who had no clue how to treat out and it just made my symptoms so much worse

I love that you know your boundaries! Seeing a therapist who claims to specialize in 20 different issues is crazy to me. Know your scope of practice!!!!

the conflict of interest one should be a rule every therapist has, because it violates most codes of ethics and is just not appropriate

Yes trauma isn’t funny however I felt the smile was more you being happy that you can help those of us who have trauma. Trauma is a very delicate thing to go to therapy for so having a true trauma informed therapist is important (that’s why I chose the therapist I did after researching for months on therapists in my area)

I wish the last therapist I went to was honest about this because I have OCD and it did not help at all. in fact it made it worse lol

my father is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. when I was younger I didn't understand how he could "turn away" certain clients, but just what you're saying - can't be the right fit for everyone. makes much more sense now 😂

Hell yeah to therapists knowing their limits and strengths. My current therapist specializes in trauma and dissociation but mostly works with children and teenagers, even though I sensed it would take some work from both of us to find the correct way to work together as psychoeducation, cognitive approaches and EMDR are not something that would help me and I tend to feel looked down upon easily, her background with working with children has been really beneficial with not scaring the child part away. Every therapist has a background and there are people who benefit from that background on a person-to-person level.

This conversation is not nearly had enough in the global population. Thank you so much. Someone who is struggling deserves to have this information before they have to be vulnerable - it’s ethical to practice this way and also doesn’t create expectations that can be dangerous or have bad outcomes, no matter how well meaning we can be.

As a client, I would much rather this sort of transparency than being gaslit into thinking my complex issues were all “beyond help” (which has happened). No shame in having specialities or admitting you only work with one modality

My husbands family has a therapist who sees multiple of them separately (not for like specific group therapy) and they all think it’s totally normal! I’ve always raised my eyebrows at that and been suspicious of this lady
