Thanks for sharing your reflections. I also hesitated to claim Indigenous. So I usually say Zapoteca living in diaspora. I was born in Oaxaca and my family (both sides) are from a Pueblo originario. I understand quite a bit of zapoteco and can speak some. I have held on to as much of the culture (food, language, practices, beliefs etc.) as possible and passing it down to my child. For these reasons, I claim it. And especially with all the pretendians who just use their DNA tests and features for individual opportunities. BUT, I feel uneasy claiming it when compared to the life of some of my relatives in the pueblo. However in the pueblo, I’m not Indigenous, I’m Matateca or Zapoteca. Of course, there are folks who also see me as an outsider. But my relationship is primary to the land that held my first steps. Anyway, because our identities are contextual, I think it’s ok to claim with your own asterisk. It’s not so black and white. Saludos!

i too am a new jersey oaxacan and my family is from la mixteca but my pueblo is not indigenous at all and they only speak spanish and ive even heard people there and around make jokes against indigenous people and attributes related to them…. you’re right its more than just DNA because i am 70% mixtec by blood and my family only lives in that region for generations but literally racist against indigenous people and i am always the first to call it out and its the reason ive stopped talking to a lot of family because theyre ignorant and brainwashed by spanish and european sentiments

You can claim to be whatever you choose to be. Don’t allow online leftists to tell you otherwise.

the average Mexican is native by 80% its something to be proud of just the gov told you to be ashamed of it...Catholicism is what made Mexicans shamed of what they are and dividing each other up they have like 2% spanish and think it makes them closer to whiteness...indigenous pride is something to celebrate especially from Oaxaca the best traditions food and people in the world...the state alone has 16 different tribes each so beautiful!
