@dtla.budget.trave: 3110 N Broadway in Lincoln Heights, California—celebrated as the Horace P. Dibble House—is a soaring 1880s Queen Anne and Italianate Victorian mansion that stands as one of Los Angeles' most fascinating, drama-filled residential landmarks. Officially designated as Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #157, this lumbering off-yellow property has spent over a century masking dark true crime and intense counterculture controversies behind its beautiful, ornate facade. The home’s history took a violent turn in the late 19th century under its original resident, a crockery company salesman named Horace B. Dibble. On the morning of June 18, 1896, a fierce workplace argument erupted between Dibble and a shipping clerk named James Wallace over a delivery dispute. When Wallace threatened to smash Dibble's head with a hammer, Dibble retaliated by pulling out a six-inch knife and fatally stabbing Wallace. The subsequent murder trial shocked the young city of Los Angeles, though Dibble was ultimately acquitted on grounds of self-defense later that year. Over a century later, the property found itself at the center of a new kind of chaos. In 2007, artistic partners Charon Nogues and Reid Maxwell transformed the derelict estate into HM157, an infamous, underground DIY art and music collective. Celebrated by LA Weekly as an escape from corporate entertainment, the venue became a legendary grassroots hub for bohemian creatives, hosting eccentric punk rock concerts, film screenings, and bizarre variety shows. However, modern controversy continued to plague the site. In May 2015, a massive, unexplained fire ripped through the backyard performance space, completely destroying the outdoor stage and devastating the residents living inside. Following the disaster, the venue fell into extreme legal turmoil. The collective faced bitter courtroom eviction battles with their landlord over unpaid pandemic rent and severely neglected property repairs, prompting a desperate, high-profile community fundraising push to save the beloved underground space from being permanently wiped away. #LosAngelesHistory #TrueCrimeTok #HM157 #LincolnHeights
