@stageandstory: Steinbeck’s East of Eden is a masterpiece. But does Netflix understand what he was saying about good and evil? Here’s why I turned the adaptation off after just three episodes. 📚 #EastOfEden #JohnSteinbeck #Netflix #ChristianReviews #BookTok

I watched the first three episodes and quit at that point as well. Just an absolute brutal adaptation for people who loved the book.

I felt the same way at first, but her darkness comes out quite a bit as the show progresses. I'm actually impressed with how much of the book they've packed in, even while leaving out things I wish had stayed. I wouldn't have been able to cut a single page and I know that's not realistic.

My opinion judging a film series that you didn't bother to finish watching doesn't carry a great deal of weight. theologically speaking the devil was not always evil and evil is a moral choice both of those live in the film adaptation. and we can't forget that Steinbeck didn't like women and wrote almost all his women in a very misogynist way, so there's that. Interpreting his work thoughtfully is not a disservice.

Thanks for your thoughts. They match my reasons for not watching. However I may weaken.

I would encourage you to continue watching. I think the show does humanize Cathy to a certain degree that Steinbeck does not, but if anything I believe it makes the concept of Timshel more powerful imo. Cathy is not necessarily “born” a monster in this adaption. But that doesn’t make her any less evil, it just puts her on level ground with all the other characters struggling with their morality. It therefore depicts her evil deeds an active choice, not a default setting of her character. As the show progresses, you really see the ways in which she chooses to succumb to her trauma and allows it to consume her soul. The somewhat sympathetic lens of her backstory makes her a tragic villain for sure - but a villain nonetheless.

Many unfavorably critiquing a book they could never write( and nearly as many won't even read).

I couldn’t do the full first episode because it was too intense. I loved the book, but I had to pause occasionally for the same reason.

I'd never tell anyone to shy away from anything above the level of Real Housewives as entertainment. I support a female perspective especially since we excuse 💯 of evil men. Why can't a woman be locked in hate after being so badly treated?
