@troyakinpickleball: Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and I’ve been thinking about the places this sport has taken me. Lake Tahoe is Washoe land. The East Bay, where I coach, is Ohlone and Bay Miwok land. Santa Barbara, where Alex and I are heading next week, is Chumash land. These communities cared for these places for thousands of years before any of us showed up with a paddle. They didn’t just live on the land. They protected it. That matters to me. Taking care of the planet is a big part of why Alex and I do what we do, and Native communities have been leading that work for generations. So today I’m celebrating the first people of this land, not the man who claimed to discover it. Do you know whose land you play on? Look up your local courts at native-land.ca and drop it in the comments. 👇 #IndigenousPeoplesDay #HonorNativeLand #Pickleball

And before it was those previous peoples land, it was someone else’s before them. Every piece of land on earth has been conquered at some point. Hope this helps.

We’re all cousins if you go back to the time indigenous people say they, I mean we, settled everywhere.

This is so beautiful and I’m glad you posted. We need to be aware of people who came before us and have respect for that long history.🥰

This is not true at all, as indigenous people occupied less than one percent of US land mass when settlers first arrived.

Are you saying that only indigenous people should live on indigenous land? So only native French in France, only indigenous English in England, only indigenous Spanish in Spain, only indigenous Germans in Germany, etc. That would not be good for refugees or immigrants. It is okay to recognize indigenous peoples but don’t suggest it is their land because it is not. Many of those so called indigenous people took the land from prior indigenous people. That is history. Humans have always spread throughout the Earth. Those that came to the Americas just wanted to live peacefully on the land but ended up having to fight because the indigenous people did not want to leave peacefully with the new inhabitants. Warring indigenous tribes always existed in the Americas long before Europeans came to the Americas. They fought and conquered each other to take lands. It’s okay to acknowledge prior inhabitants but don’t do it by claiming they were more noble than current inhabitants. 😎😎😎

Ok, so let’s say indigenous people should live on their own land. Does this apply to Jewish people and Israel lol

I lovely, if flawed message. First order thinking her, my guys. The Stone Age civilizations you idolize in your post were no better or worse than most. Some were peaceful, most were not. Some were more egalitarian in gender rights, most were not. Some practice farming, most were hunter gatherers. Some practiced slavery, many did not. You can rightfully decry the barbarism of many of the large colonial powers, but few nations had clean hands. Also, how far back do we go to establish “ownership” of a place, or acceptable behaviors though the lens of current judgement?
