She was murdered by her own son, who was later arrested and paraded by the police alongside his accomplice. On the night of 24 December 2024, Justina Amunde, a 50-year-old woman living in the Ohong community, Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State, returned home late from the Christmas Eve church vigil. She locked the doors and went to bed, unaware that her 29-year-old son, Mathias Amunde Ugwe, and an accomplice had already entered the house while she was away and were hiding in the kitchen store. Sometime during the night, the house help, Fortunate Ochonu, woke up to get water from the kitchen. She noticed movement in the store and realised that someone was hiding inside the house. She screamed. The noise woke Justina, who came out of her room to investigate. She found herself face-to-face with her own son. Mathias allegedly picked up a heavy hammer and attacked her. Justina did not survive the assault. After killing her, the attackers took some of her personal belongings, wrapped her body, and dumped it into a well within the compound. They then threatened the house help and forced her onto a motorcycle, intending to take her away from the scene. Their escape plan failed when they encountered a police checkpoint. They abandoned the motorcycle, giving the house help a chance to escape and raise the alarm. Mathias disappeared and remained on the run for several weeks. On 26 December 2024, another son, Thomas Amunde, reported his mother and the house help missing at the police station, claiming that they had not returned from the Christmas vigil. The body was recovered from the well on 28 December after the house help narrated what had happened. In the second week of January 2025, Mathias was arrested in Betriko, Boki Local Government Area. He was later paraded by the Cross River State Police Command alongside his accomplice, Emmanuel Oruru. A third suspect, Henry Abang, remained at large. Both Mathias and Oruru confessed to the crime. The case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Calabar for further investigation and prosecution. The motive was linked to a money ritual. Mathias had allegedly been influenced by a native doctor, and some of his mother’s belongings, including her hair, were required for ritual purposes.
