@hanshoffmann45: This animation shows how Brussels has changed commune by commune since 1950, along with where the name Mohamed ranks among baby boy names. In 1950 Brussels was almost entirely white. That began to change in 1964, when Belgium signed labour agreements with Morocco and Turkey to bring in workers for its mines and factories. Many stayed and brought their families, and later waves came from Congo, West Africa and the Middle East. Brussels also became home to tens of thousands of EU officials and workers from across Europe. The biggest changes happened in the communes west and north of the city center. Molenbeek, Saint Josse, Schaerbeek and Anderlecht are now around 27 to 38% white. The communes in the southeast, like Woluwe Saint Pierre, Watermael Boitsfort and Uccle, are still around 72 to 78%. Mohamed first appears among the top 100 boy names in the late 1960s and climbs steadily. It ranked first from 2008 to 2015 and has been second, just behind Adam, since 2016. Belgium does not record race, so all % white figures are estimates based on Statbel data on residents' origins. Mohamed's rankings before 2008 are also estimates.
