One important new skill the Philippine Navy has gained through the acquisition of modern warships under the ongoing AFP Modernization Program is the ability to conduct underway replenishment, the resupply and refueling of naval vessels while at sea. In the past, the patrol endurance of Philippine Navy vessels was often limited by their available fuel and supplies. Once their provisions or fuel were depleted, ships had to return to port for refueling and reprovisioning, reducing the time they could remain on station. With newer ships and improved capabilities, however, the Philippine Navy is now developing the ability to replenish its vessels while underway, essentially allowing a warship to receive fuel and supplies from a “moving gas station or convenience store” at sea, including from allied and partner-nation replenishment ships. This capability was recently demonstrated during the 19th Multilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity, when the Philippine Navy’s BRP Diego Silang (FFG-07) conducted an underway replenishment exercise with the Royal Australian Navy’s fleet oiler, HMAS Supply. The exercise involved the crew of BRP Diego Silang, with assistance from Royal Australian Navy personnel embarked aboard the Philippine frigate, as they carried out the complex procedure. Mastering underway replenishment is a major step forward for the Philippine Navy. It gives Philippine warships greater endurance and allows them to remain at sea for longer periods without having to return to port simply to refuel or replenish supplies. More importantly, this capability becomes increasingly vital as the Philippine Navy prepares for missions that may require extended patrols and sustained operations far from Philippine ports. It could also serve as valuable experience for the Philippine Navy should it eventually acquire its own fleet replenishment or support vessels capable of conducting underway replenishment . From simply operating modern warships to mastering the complex skills required to keep them at sea, the Philippine Navy is slowly but surely expanding its operational capabilities. #brpdiegosiangffg07 #hmassupplya195 #underwayreplenishment #maritimecooperativeactivity #fyp #bonscueph
