@dr.emily.king: Owning a pet is a choice, and with that choice comes responsibility. But where do we draw the line between providing veterinary care for our pets and protecting the financial well-being of our families? It’s a difficult conversation, but one worth having. Loving your pet doesn’t mean putting your family’s financial stability at risk, and choosing not to pursue treatment doesn’t mean you love them any less. #veterinarian #vetmed #vettech #veterinarylife #vettechlife
Having a pet is a human right. This narrative is dangerous. Not saying I disagree with you, but I think your missing a big piece; people should be able to own pets (again it’s a human right—we don’t get to control who owns pets), AND be able to afford care for them. BOTH should exist at the same time. And because we know it’s not possible to afford private practice medicine, for most, what do we do? Tell them to get rid of their beloved pet? Surrender it to the already overburdened shelter system? Or create programs to support both human and pet?

YES! No one is owed a pet. Owning a pet is not a right, it is a privilege.

owning a pet is a privilege, I hate when people don't vaccinated farm dogs and outdoor pets they KNOW will get possible diseases

Furthermore, from a shelter perspective, there is no huge pool of people that have 5-10k plus of disposable income to funnel all of these animals into. Sometimes the best home they can hope for is with a working class person that probably works two jobs to make sure they can afford their basic needs is the only option. People euthanizing animals due to cost is the biggest cause of burnout for me. There has to be a better way.

Idk when I got my dog in 2017, the bills then I could afford on my now income. But 9 years later, the vet bills have double or tripled in price. My salary went up a quarter, which is great. So my 9 year old I have to make choices to care for him because of the price increase. That’s not his fault. I literally got a degree, a good paying job, so I could afford dogs and it’s still insane.

I got my dog ten years ago, I worked full time but didn’t make much, lived at home still too. A year or so later she needed major surgery and I couldn’t afford it, but I did everything I could to make it happen. Took me a few years to pay off the credit card, but she’s alive and I’d do it again if I had to. Then I see some people moving and can’t take their dog?? Sure there are circumstances, but being willing to give up a pet so easily is wild to me

I get this to a certain extent. Usually there’s a lot of planning that goes into welcoming a new fury family member. But sometimes for our kitty friends at least where I live the ultimatum is that these fury companions are abandoned, constantly reproducing, and kittens are left with nowhere to go and are extremely vulnerable. Rescues and shelters are packed and often times cannot take anymore cats or kittens. We JUST lost our Kiwi in September because we couldn’t pay a 6,157 dollar vet bill. My niece called me this week and said I found a kitten outside my home 🤦♀️this kitten has nowhere to go, and can’t stay with my niece because her dog has ☠️kittens. So, here she is. At my house 😐. After we literally just euthanized kiwi. This was not planned🤷♀️it’s honestly not within our budget right now. We were going to wait until I was working again before getting another cat. We are looking into getting her insured through Trupanion. We are also looking into care plans from local veterinary offices that helps cover routine checkups etc. We are being as proactive as we possibly can be. I’ve had to rehome kittens. Kittens and cats are a dime a dozen, and we just don’t trust people enough to care for her given past experiences with rehoming babies. It stinks because there are so many kitties around here and just not enough homes. Rescues and shelters are just barely getting by, and it’s sad. I named her Star 🌟 which ended up being quite perfect because we found out through Google that NASAS picture of the day on the day of Kiwi’s passing was a picture of “starnovas” which is the death of a Star 🌟😭♥️🐾.

yep. In my ER years I used to tell people that I couldn't advocate for them spending on their pet until the mortgage, power, water and groceries were paid for the family...after we that, we do the best we can for the animal. The people have to come first

I work at a vet hospital. The office visit went up 32% in 4 years. my pay went up 10% (cost of living increase was about 14.3% in that time)

After I refinanced my car to pay my dogs Cornell vet bill is when I realized I need a separate savings account for my pets I put into monthly. I had to put him down 2 months later after 3 weeks at Cornell and I never had any regrets on spending the money knowing I did what I could. And I knew I never wanted to go through that again, if possible. Having the safety net now has already paid off. Even if it’s a little net.

well...I'd been saving up to put a new deck on my house. I adopted a dog after I lost one a few months ago. he needed surgery to correct a luxating patella. I'm putting off the new deck until next year. I'm okay with that. the current deck is fine until I can get a new one.

It’s so important to legitimize this again. There’s so much emotional attachment - understandably but the choice is important.

I mean, owning a pet is a responsibility and a choice. If you don’t have the time or money to provide for that pet, you shouldn’t have it. It’s not ok to just euthanize a pet because you don’t want or can’t spend money on caring for them. Sometimes you must surrender something in order to give them the care they need. So many things are replaceable. Pets are not.

But animals are kids for some people. If one person would go in debt for their child, another would for their pet. At least the pet is getting care. Most people will euthanize just because the vet won’t give free antibiotics. I’d rather deal with a pet parent that is willing to lose their house for their pet than someone who so easily gives up.

I’m dealing with the hardest thing I’ve ever had to deal with. My husband has a big dog that he brought into the relationship and shes been nothing but a problem. The issue is, he doesn’t feel the same way about the problems as I do and it affects our daily life . He’s ok dealing with the problems as they come, there’s not just one issue it’s multiple and it is really hard to navigate because he feels differently towards the dog than I do. I personally don’t feel like he gives her the life she deserves, and he allows her to do whatever she wants with no boundaries. I feel like I have no say because it’s his dog and we don’t see eye to eye anything regarding her
