TODRICK :
I want to thank you for your honest and candid review. No art is for everyone and I knew that this would be controversial and divisive when I wrote it, but in a world full of jukebox musicals and revivals I felt compelled to tell this complex story that was inspired by the first musical I ever saw and what made me want to do theatre “Aida.” I understand that this chapter of our history was traumatic, but I do think stories like this did exist whether people want to watch them for entertainment or not. But here are the facts; We have one of the most diverse audiences right now on or off broadway, people who look like you ARE enjoying the show so it’s not NOT for people who look like us in fact I’ve posted videos of black ppl coming again and again and raving about their experience and to say that it’s not going to cause conversation for folks that don’t look like us or change how they vote is a complete assumption…we can never say how art and music is going to effect/inspire someone. My show wasn’t for you, I get it. It’s a hefty length. The first act is 80 minutes and act 2 is 70 minutes (not fully three hours, but a significant run time for a significant price) I would love to chat with you personally about changes that could be made to perhaps make this experience less triggering while keeping its artistic integrity and again thank you for your honesty even though you were an invited guest…this is the only way we grow.
