In February 2020, a disturbing 911 call led Winter Park, Florida, police to the home of Sarah Boone, 42. Boone claimed her boyfriend, Jorge Torres Jr., had died accidentally while the couple was playing a game involving a suitcase. But what investigators discovered told a very different story. Jorge was found dead inside the suitcase, with bruising on his hands and injuries consistent with an attempt to escape. The suitcase had been zipped shut from the outside. Then detectives found videos on Boone’s phone. The recordings showed Jorge trapped inside the suitcase, pleading for help and saying he couldn’t breathe. Boone could be heard laughing and taunting him, including telling him, “That’s what I feel like when you cheat on me.” Despite the distress captured on video, she didn’t contact 911 until the following morning. Investigators determined that Jorge’s death was not accidental, and Boone was charged with second-degree murder. The case took another unusual turn when Boone dismissed her attorneys and decided to represent herself. From jail, she also circulated flyers seeking new legal representation, claiming she had been misunderstood.
