The best part about trades videos are the armchair experts telling the person how they did something wrong. That’s entertaining. His repair worked, didn’t it? It doesn’t matter if there are easier ways or different shapes to use, it doesn’t matter because his method did fine. You go film your method and show everyone and they’ll complain about how you did something wrong too. 😂

Instead of cutting the pattern for the hole, you put a square that just fits over the hole and covers all the bad stuff around the edge of the hole and you cut it out square and you put it in and you put the 4 strips of tape on it, not all the way, completely covering the board trust. Me, I've been doing this for 49 years.

Just saying :

Honestly I would cut hole to a square . Cut piece to size,then patch. That would be easier and solve same issue. Common sense

You need to seal the brown paper or you the joint compound won’t adhere properly. I use pro 999. It works great.
