Please world, listen! In Iraq, girls face the threat of child marriage as young as nine. Mothers risk losing their children, women face serious barriers to divorce even when the husband commits adultery, and women can be killed in the name of so-called honour while the law provides reduced penalties for this crime in certain cases. Where is the justice? Where are our rights? How can a mother lose her child and a woman lose her freedom simply because she is a woman? What about child's rights and safety?! The new law is presented as optional, but where is the choice for women when men can seek to apply it to existing marriage contracts without their wives' or ex-wives' consent? A law cannot offer genuine choice if women have no meaningful say in decisions that affect their lives and their children. Please, world, hear us! Stand with Iraqi women and girls. Raise your voices, share our stories, and demand equality, protection, and justice. Our children are not possessions. Our lives are not worth less.
