I would agree that this applies to many relationships. I would also point out that in this complex world that we live in where not everyone is middle class or above (but even within those groups as well), couples are increasingly dealing with some pretty severe trauma, medical issues, addictions, and severe economic issues that are much more complex than who is the more thoughtful or considerate person.

I didn’t even mind being the person to give more. The part I couldnt deal with was the fact that it was never meaningful to her or enough so I felt like I was on a hamster wheel of giving and no matter how much I gave it never amounted to anything.

Or maybe they where a better person than you. I'll be the first to admit that in my past, they were just more mature, intelligent, understanding... the list goes on. This flips both ways. Sometimes they were not up to the same level as myself. The answers often won't come until much further down the road, if at all.

I have always said every relationship has a giver and a taker. One person keeps the entire world in balance and the other is there for the ride. And it doesn’t necessarily mean the giver is the bread winner.
