@whatmojoloves: I see a lot a studio vs. client discourse on here recently in relation to classpass. I’m here to reroute that energy to the true villain…classpass.
As a paying member of a studio with limited spaces, Spots should go to paying members first before class pass people

It’s so complicated bc, I could never afford Pilates classes if it weren’t for class pass I’m in nyc 😭

Interesting points I wasn’t aware of as a ClassPass consumer! I live in NYC and already have a gym membership, so I use ClassPass to supplement my workouts and enjoy the variety of studios available. I have no intention of committing to one studio, and paying $30–$40+ per class at multiple studios just isn’t realistic. I think there’s a huge market for people like me who value that flexibility. Hopefully there’s a way for studios to be fairly compensated without losing what makes ClassPass so appealing to consumers.

I like that I can cancel anytime. I hate jumping through hoops to cancel a gym membership.

Dumb question why don’t workout studios team up with other studios and do packages where you can take x amount of classes from these exact studios for x price, and have the price and amount of classes up to par with class pass. Ie. 4 workout studios in south LA ( a spin, Pilates, berries type, and hot yoga) say you can take 8 standard classes in total from these studios for $200. The $200 gives you 40 credits and a standard class is 5 credits, shorter class may be 2.5 and a more intense class may be 7. And credits roll over for 3 months (unlike cp). This gives people the ability to still try classes and not be married to one workout studio and it gives studios more profit

Pilates is insanely priced. I could never afford a monthly pilates pack, plus a gym membership, plus a place to cycle, etc. That would be $600+ a month which an average person could NEVER afford. I love Classpass because I'm able to do everything I want at a fair price. Nobody wants 4 memberships just to be healthy.

There is just a general gap in the market because if I already do strength training at a gym I’m not paying 2/3/4 hundred extra dollars a month for a few classes the group fitness classes are wildly overpriced

But why are studios are just sooo expensive tho!! Like can they make it comparable to class pass rates??

I wonder if classpass would be better perceived if they limited prebooking to day of. If you really want to “try classes” it’s more of a spontaneous thing and let direct paying members of the gyms/studios get to book a week or a month in advance

I converted from classpass to a regular at my favorite studio. what really helped was the studio offering perks directly that competed with classpass and actually made it worth it. ie, discounted class packs. On a quarterly basis, they offered 35-40% off classpacks. The cost just about evened out with the cost per credit on classpass. I am much happier directly supporting the studio, but I can only do that because it makes sense economically.

I feel like classpass has always been marketed as a one pass for all studios in your area not necessarily to try various studios. It was always a gym alternative to me

I have a membership with my favorite studio but I do utilize class pass for the occasional reformer class. I’m not going to pay $30 for a drop in when I can pay $40 for class pass and go 3-4x a month. I get class pass is the villain but at the end of the day, these studios CHOSE to be on class pass and they’re filling a spot that wouldn’t have been filled if it weren’t for class pass.

Studios aren’t using ClassPass to its fullest potential. What other marketing tool do you get paid for? The goal should be conversion to direct members, not relying on ClassPass to fill your classes

Real. Last week one of my classes went from 7 to 13 credits. I skipped and went to another studio. I only get like 29 credits a month 😭 I’ll cancel class pass as a whole and do my workouts at the gym.

Classpass gives me an affordable option as someone who only does Pilates 1x a week due to my work AND weightlifting schedule. I’m not paying 100+ a month for 4 classes when I can pay $60 for 4 classes + rollover classes!

The stark difference in the class pass prices vs the studio price makes it so hard to buy direct from studios. If the difference wasn’t so much, I would be more than happy to pay a little bit more to the studios.

I show up to these classes and they aren’t full. So what would these studios do without class pass customers? I love class pass I as a mom I can only go to certain studios cause they hold late classes but also not every studio has good instructors which is why it’s hard for me to commit to a studio 😅

When 4 classes of Pilates is $500a month and a 6 month contract, it makes it hard not to use class pass!!

I’m a yoga instructor and I don’t push memberships because I am first and foremost a woman in this economy who understands how expensive it is to stay in shape with a variety of workouts. My old studio was on classpass and I never made students feel bad for using it because I do too! I take 12 studio classes a month for $69. At 3-4 different locations. You’re just not gonna convince me to buy a membership at 1 studio for $140/month. ESPECIALLY at a corporate owned place🤷🏽♀️

I feel the same way about DoorDash and Uber Eats. Yes they help bring traffic to local restaurants, but the platforms take their cut and it can screw the business trying to bring more people in.

I wonder why studios still use it . I was considering using it again because I’m a mom who can only do a studio workout on the weekend. Now I’m like should I not use it 😅.

I had the 90 credit class pass plan because I wanted flexibility and to try different workouts. I loved the flexibility but then I found myself going to the same studio because I fell in love with the studio and the instructors and it was convenient. so chat gpt broke it down for me and found myself break even point between credits and the unlimited membership so before the next cycle I dropped my CP level and did a membership at the Pilates studio I was going 3x a week. Now I go to that studio 4-5 times a week and still use CP 1-2 a week for studios further away from me that I will go to on the weekends.
