@tommi.thor: Hauling line on a wonderful Monday morning. It’s about six in the morning, and we had set the gear on a soft sandy bottom the previous evening, hoping to catch some haddock. Since we had been hitting our cod quota for the month, we needed some haddock to balance things out. We ended up setting the line about 30 nautical miles off the east coast of Iceland. We baited with pure squid and laid about 15 nautical miles of line on a soft sandy bottom at depths of 70 to 100 fathoms. It ended up netting us about 8 tonnes of haddock and 6 tonnes of cod, which is a pretty decent day of longlining when you’re targeting haddock. You can easily catch pure cod, and a lot of it, here in Iceland. But if you want haddock, you’re almost always going to catch cod along with it. You’re lucky if you manage a 50/50 split between cod and haddock. And it’s never the big cod that spend their time on these sandy bottoms, so you have to be a pretty skilled captain if you want to catch those haddock!
