I have only heard that argument in terms of classic literature, as in the stories being a reflection of f the time that they were written. Not people, like Christopher Columbus who did abhorrent things that were recognized as being unethical well he was alive and he faced punishment for that.

While I do think it is important to try and place events/choices/behaviors in the context of their time as much as we can, the reality is that the nature of people hasn't changed all that much. You read texts from a thousand or more years ago and realize that people still felt and thought and dreamed. Columbus knew he did horrible things. He wrote all about it closer to his death. He started out with good intentions, got pulled in to terrible acts by greed and lust, and knowingly did horrific things to tons of people. He was the "product of his time" in the same way that the Cornell 57 are a product of our time, or the folks in the Epstein files. He knew he did wrong. He died in shame and guilt knowing it.

I was reading a book series and there was a character that was Absolutely appalling exaggerated stereotypes of a Chinese man. it kept getting worse the more I read, and other fans of the series said that "it was the 90s, it was a different time for authors, plus its based in the 1700s and racism and ignorance was commonplace then." She a great writer, she could've found another way to do it without gross misrepresentation. that choice ruined her books for me. author didnt do any research on that time period in china, let alone bother to ask a cultural consultant,(or any other cultural consultant for the books set in Haiti or the Americas. she admitted to only using stereotypes and still doesn't see what's wrong with it and has never apologized for it. I had to DNF the book series. the last straw was man had a foot fetish and described it as being connected to foot binding in a gross way and it made me sick to see someone's culture represented in that way. I grew up watching Dr Quinn medicine woman about a woman doctor in the 1800s. it aired on TV in the 70s and 80s. they tackle the same topic of foot binding with so much grace and better overall because they hired cultural consultants and tried their best to be accurate while still calling the binding out for being terrible. "it was a different time" doesn't mean shit to me, especially if someone gets called on their bs and they only shrug, "oh well,"
