@re.john21: How do you turn an ordinary-looking rock into iron without electricity, modern machinery or an industrial steel mill? In the Bassar region of northern Togo, generations of African ironworkers developed sophisticated techniques for extracting iron from ore using clay furnaces, charcoal and carefully managed airflow. Archaeological evidence places iron production in the region more than 2,000 years ago, with a major expansion of the industry during the medieval period. But the fascinating part is the science. Charcoal did more than provide heat. It helped create the chemical conditions needed to remove oxygen from iron minerals. The result was a spongy mass of iron mixed with slag, which skilled smiths could refine through repeated heating and hammering. This was not simply a matter of making a few tools. Iron production became part of a regional economy involving specialized labour, natural resources and trade. In this episode of History Speaks, we explore the engineering, chemistry and accumulated knowledge behind one of West Africa’s remarkable ironworking traditions. Because African history isn’t only the history of kings, kingdoms and monuments. It’s also the history of the people who understood materials, mastered processes and built the technologies that sustained their societies. #africa #explore #discover #story #History
