Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, comfort me. O good Jesus, hear me. Within your wounds hide me. Back from the Communion line, you kneel in the pew and close your eyes. Words fail. Nearly 700 years ago, someone had already written the ones that fit this silence. It's called Anima Christi, Soul of Christ. It's a medieval prayer, in Latin. By 1330 it was prayed widely enough for Pope John XXII to reward those who prayed it. The Church still rewards those who pray it after Communion. Many people credit the prayer to Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Yet it was already in manuscripts more than a century before he was born, in 1491. Ignatius got it ready-made and only quoted it in the Spiritual Exercises, so well known was it. Even so, it was his name that stuck. The prayer asks huge things in short phrases: sanctify, save, wash, comfort. At the end, whoever prays asks to be hidden in the wounds of Christ. English singer Sophie Clarke sings this without pushing. She asks. If words ever fail you after Communion, someone has prayed this before you. Many people.
