@fabrisgassmoney: My ex-husband invited the former wife he believed was still childless and miserable to his family's Christmas at their military estate. He never imagined I would arrive on a government tactical helicopter — with four eight-year-olds who had his face. PART 1 For eight years that man made no attempt to contact me. None. Then on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon in the November his name came up on my secure phone. Grayson Vail. I was at my desk at headquarters with four files open in front of me on a multistate thing that is not going in here, and I sat and looked at that screen for about eleven seconds. Eight years, almost to the week. That is how long it had been since he called my pregnancy a desperate manoeuvre to stop him leaving. Eight years since he filed, arranged an overseas posting inside about four weeks, changed his number, and went. Without attending one single appointment. Not the first one. Not the twenty-week. And not the one in the March where a woman turned a screen round and told me how many there were, and I sat in that room on my own for about eleven minutes afterwards because I could not make my legs work. And now, on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon in November, that man wanted me at Christmas dinner. There was no apology in that message. There was no explanation. There was no how are you, and there was no question mark anywhere in it, and there was nothing at all about four children. Four lines, written the way that man has written every instruction of his life. Mother would like to see you one final time. Christmas Day. The Vail place, Fort Ellsworth. Make sure you're there. I read it twice. Then a third time, slowly. And then I smiled, and I want to be honest about that smile, because I have had eleven weeks to look at it and it was not a good one. Because Grayson Vail still had me filed as the frightened twenty-six-year-old standing on the steps of a military courthouse in a coat that did not fit. He had spent eight years assuming I was struggling. Alone. Behind on something. Regretting it. Probably, somewhere in the back of it, still hoping. I know that because of the last four words of his message, which are the words of a man who expects to be obeyed by somebody who has nothing else on. He had no idea at all. My name is Zora Vail. I kept the name. Every form in that building says Commander Vail. It is on a door. It is on four hundred reports. I will come back to why, because it is not the reason anybody assumes and it is not flattering. I am a commander. I run an investigative division of about forty people at the Texas Department of Public Safety. I got there the long way — four postings I would not wish on anybody, two years of nights, and a stretch in 2020 where I was doing all of it with four five-year-olds and a woman called Rosemary who I will be paying back for the rest of my life. And I had built a life that did not require one single thing from that man. Not a dollar. Not a telephone call. Nothing, in eight years, and I have the records because I kept them. Officer Pell put her head round my door about four minutes later. She has worked with me six years and she can read my face from the corridor. "Commander. Please tell me you are not thinking about going." I put the phone face down on the desk. "Oh, I'm going." She looked at me. "Seriously?" "Absolutely." And I turned round to the window, where four departmental aircraft were sitting out on the tarmac in the afternoon sun. "But not the way he's expecting." I made that decision in about four seconds. On a Tuesday afternoon, at a desk, with four open files on a serious piece of work in front of me, looking out of a window at an aircraft. I want that on the page plainly, because everything that happened on Christmas Day came out of those four seconds — and in those four seconds I was not thinking about my children at all. I was thinking about a man's face. I did not think about my children for another eleven days. Not in connection with any of it.
