I was exhausted, my back hurt, and our newest little Jelly Bean had apparently decided my bladder was a trampoline. “Daddy, shower!” Christopher announced. Yes, buddy. I know.” I got Christopher into the shower first. He spent most of it playing with his bath toys while I washed his hair. “Close your eyes, baby.”“No soap, Daddy!”Christopher, we've been over this.” Twenty minutes later, my little boy was clean, dressed in his pajamas, and running toward the living room. Then came Maddison. Thankfully, May was already there. Maddison's showers always required two people. With her cerebral palsy and feeding tube, we had a routine that kept her comfortable and safe. “I've got her, Buck,” May said. “Thanks. My back is killing me.” Together, we helped Maddison through her shower. May supported her while I gently washed her hair and little body. “There we go, princess. All clean.” Maddison smiled at me with those beautiful chocolate-brown eyes she inherited from Eddie. God, she looked so much like her papa. Once she was dry and dressed, May helped with her feeding-tube care and changed the tube according to her care plan. Meanwhile, I prepared Maddison's feeds, checking everything before setting up her feeding pump. “Okay, baby girl. Dinner is ready.” May watched me lower myself carefully onto the couch. “Buck, you need to rest.” “I know.” “You say that every day.” “Because I'm tired every day.” She laughed.
