More than 200 aftershocks had already been recorded by October 11, including a powerful M6.6, and another M6.0 earthquake struck Panama on October 12 at a depth of about 35 km. Authorities say the frequency and strength of the aftershocks are gradually decreasing, but the sequence is still ongoing as the crust readjusts after the main rupture. The damage assessment is also still growing. By October 12, officials reported 420 affected homes in Veraguas, along with damaged schools, health centers, churches, roads and other infrastructure. Fourteen shelters were active with nearly 600 people. Aftershocks can continue for days, weeks or longer after a major earthquake, and already-damaged structures can be especially vulnerable to additional shaking.
