Credit reporting companies are such a scam. One of them reported my score dropped 50 points a few months ago. I called them and said, why did you guys do that? Nothing happened. I didn't apply for credit. Didn't pay anything off. Wasn't late on any payments. Didn't take out a new loan. They just said "oops" and put it back up 50 points. It's all made up!

So typically the data that gets used for marketing purposes is completely separate from the data used to make credit decisions (which is subject to FCRA and other regulations.) doesn’t make it any less dumb, but slightly less far reaching in its dumbness
