Black liquid bubbling up through the foundation of one family’s dream home. Toxic drinking water. And dead livestock. In Oklahoma, oil field wastewater is causing a massive underground pollution crisis that is threatening communities across the state. The United States is the largest oil and gas producer in the world. In Oklahoma, oil has been drilled for more than a century and is a major industry. Companies inject tens of billions of gallons of toxic wastewater into the ground each year, enough to fill the Empire State Building more than 300 times. The fluid is frequently injected at high pressures and volumes, allowing the wastewater to zoom up thousands of feet to the surface through abandoned and unplugged oil wells. Regulators have failed to stop the problem. In this new investigative documentary from The Frontier and ProPublica, reporter Nick Bowlin crisscrosses the state to uncover the impact of this environmental and public health crisis on Oklahomans. 🔗 Have you experienced pollution from oil and gas in Oklahoma?
