@datandmaps: Southern California. Death Valley. Las Vegas. Utah. Not exactly the route you expect to trace for tropical moisture. But that is where Rachel went. After moving into Southern California, Rachel's remnants traveled through the desert Southwest, carrying tropical moisture deep inland. Las Vegas ultimately received 1.08 inches of rain in a day, tying its all-time October daily rainfall record as flash flooding spread across the region. And Rachel was not happening in isolation. The 2026 eastern and central Pacific hurricane season has now become the most active on record, helped by a powerful El Niño and exceptionally warm ocean conditions. Tropical systems and their remnants have repeatedly transported moisture toward Mexico and the western United States this year. Climate change does not create an individual tropical storm. But warmer air can hold more water vapor, giving storms more moisture to work with when the atmospheric setup comes together. The Endangerment Finding may be gone. Communities still have to prepare for the danger. Source visualization: NOAA/RRFS / Ben Noll, The Washington Post #creatorsearchinsights #satellitedata #california #utah #lasvegas
