@jerseytalks_: Before bergenPAC... there was the Englewood Plaza. 🎭 Today it's bergenPAC, the Bergen Performing Arts Center on North Van Brunt Street in downtown Englewood, Bergen County. But on Monday, Nov. 22, 1926, the same building opened as the Englewood Plaza, a vaudeville and movie theater. Its first feature: Frank Capra's silent comedy "The Strong Man." The movies stopped in 1973 and the doors went dark. Then on Oct. 10, 1976, local residents led by organist and concert promoter John Harms reopened it as the John Harms Center, with pianist Lazar Berman on stage. It closed in April 2003. A group led by Frank Huttle III, later Englewood's mayor, brought it back as the nonprofit Bergen Performing Arts Center, which reopened in fall 2004 with Tony Bennett at its inaugural gala. This Nov. 22, the building turns 100. 🎉 What's your favorite memory at this theater? A movie, a concert, a show, a class? Tell us 👇 Before There Was... is our Jersey Talks series bringing back the places New Jersey remembers. Ken Burr :
I grew up 5 minutes from here. Used to see movies all the time with my mom… great memories.
