I heard both versions I didn’t think you deserved the feedback you did. The internet can be an echo chamber and not really fond of logic or even explaining what they mean. When you hear “put more soul into it” they mean you’re good, they want you to feel unrestrained and to give it your all. Not necessarily belting either, but truly untethered by negative feedback. You are putting yourself out there, I want whatever feedback you get to make you remember this infographic of 51% red 49% blue. Meaning no matter what you put out, it gets feedback of yes and no. Celebrities are very aware of this effect, and they really only pay attention to long term critique and feedback over the course of time. Otherwise if they cater to everyone wearing a red shirt, they don’t really do or create things for them, but numbers that are bound to change constantly. When you hear “put your soul into it!” I want you to think about how pop stars talk. Vocalists are great voice actors, pop stars will often talk in a certain way as they talk sing. If you think about those emoji challenges where they have to say the same phrase but sound like the emoji, the pop star is very spot on. This is because they’re reworking, rehearsing CONSTSNTLY and they need vocal nuances that will register. So they sound “more poppy” because they “sound like a pop star.” Ariana grande will change her voice and appearance constantly and perform these vocal roles. When you get so used to being expressive it will happen automatically, think about it. We can struggle to contain our excitement or hiding anger in a whisper. There’s nothing wrong with it, you’re harmonizing and hitting the same exact notes. So what the hell are they talking about? Your audience ears aren’t just picking up on melody, rhythm, pitch, tone, pacing, they can have a see into your emotional projection. Sing with your diaphragm, sit and say “I don’t care what they type. They’re going to type whatever they want, regardless of what’s in front of them.” And do a couple takes. Listen back too. This song, hopefully you can find it. It’s called noir by Lana Del Rey on YouTube. It’s very far step away from the polished pretty pop star
