Let’s talk about something many women don’t know enough about: HIGH PROLACTIN. Have you been struggling with irregular periods, missed periods or difficulty getting pregnant? Have you checked your prolactin levels? 1. WHAT IS PROLACTIN? Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland, a small gland located at the base of your brain. Its primary role is to stimulate breast milk production after childbirth. However, prolactin also interacts with the reproductive hormone system. When prolactin levels become abnormally elevated, they can interfere with the hormones responsible for ovulation and menstruation. This condition is called HYPERPROLACTINEMIA. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF HIGH PROLACTIN? High prolactin doesn’t always cause obvious symptoms, but possible signs include: • Irregular menstrual cycles. • Periods that stop completely for several months. • Difficulty ovulating. • Difficulty getting pregnant. • Milky nipple discharge when you’re not breastfeeding. • Reduced sexual desire. • Vaginal dryness or discomfort during sex. Some women may also experience headaches or vision changes, particularly when an underlying pituitary condition is involved. Please note that you can have elevated prolactin without experiencing all or any of these symptoms. HOW CAN HIGH PROLACTIN AFFECT FERTILITY? This is where it gets important for women trying to conceive. When prolactin levels are too high, they can suppress the hormonal signals between the brain and ovaries that help regulate ovulation. This may lead to: • Irregular or absent ovulation. • Irregular or absent periods. • Reduced chances of conception while ovulation is disrupted. If you’re trying to conceive and your periods have become irregular or disappeared, high prolactin is one possible factor worth discussing with your doctor. CAUSES OF HIGH PROLACTIN? Several things can raise prolactin levels, including: • Pregnancy and breastfeeding. • Certain medications, including some antipsychotics and anti-nausea medicines. • An underactive thyroid. • Stress, recent exercise or even the process of having blood drawn. • Pituitary gland conditions, including prolactin-producing tumours called prolactinomas. • Other medical conditions affecting prolactin regulation. Sometimes, the cause isn’t immediately clear. This is why it’s important not to assume you have high prolactin based on symptoms alone. HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR PROLACTIN IS HIGH? A blood test measures your prolactin level. Depending on the result and your symptoms, your healthcare provider may recommend: • Repeating the test if the elevation is mild or potentially temporary. • Reviewing your medications. • Checking thyroid function. • Pregnancy testing when appropriate. • Further investigations, such as pituitary imaging, if indicated. Please don’t diagnose yourself or start medication based on symptoms alone. CAN HIGH PROLACTIN BE TREATED? Yes! Treatment depends on the underlying cause. For example: • If an underactive thyroid is responsible, treating the thyroid condition may help normalize prolactin. • If a medication is contributing, your doctor may review it and consider alternatives where appropriate. • If a prolactinoma is responsible, medications such as cabergoline or bromocriptine may be prescribed. These medicines can lower prolactin and help restore menstrual cycles and ovulation in many women when appropriate. Never stop prescribed medication or change your dose without speaking to your healthcare provider. WHAT IF YOU HAVE BOTH PCOS AND HIGH PROLACTIN? This is important! PCOS and high prolactin can sometimes occur in the same person, but elevated prolactin should not automatically be attributed to PCOS. If you have been diagnosed with PCOS and your prolactin is high, your doctor should evaluate the prolactin elevation to determine whether another condition is contributing to your symptoms. Treating one condition does not necessarily address every factor affecting your cycle or fertility. #pcosproblems #pmos #pcoslife #hormoneimbalance #pcos
