Africa possesses extraordinary natural wealth—oil, gold, diamonds, cobalt, copper, platinum and other resources essential to the global economy. Yet many African countries continue to experience severe poverty. Understanding that contradiction means confronting the continent’s history. At the Berlin Conference of 1884–1885, European powers established rules for their competing claims in Africa. Africans were not represented. During the wider Scramble for Africa, colonial borders were frequently imposed with little regard for existing political systems, communities, languages, or patterns of movement. Colonial economies were often structured around extracting raw materials and exporting them abroad—a legacy that continued to influence economies after independence. Then came the Cold War. African independence movements entered a world where the United States, Soviet Union, former colonial powers and other states competed aggressively for influence. In Congo, Patrice Lumumba was overthrown and murdered in 1961. Belgium played a direct role in his death, while declassified evidence shows that the CIA had separately plotted to assassinate him. In Burkina Faso, Thomas Sankara pursued economic independence and sweeping domestic reforms before being assassinated during the 1987 coup that brought Blaise Compaoré to power. Today, the relationship between Africa and the global economy remains complicated. Foreign corporations, governments, debt, commodity markets, domestic political elites, corruption, conflict—and increasingly African governments’ own policy choices—all shape who ultimately benefits from the continent’s resources. Colonial rule ended. The debate over who benefits from Africa’s wealth never did. #AfricanHistory #Africa #Colonialism #ScrambleForAfrica #learnhistoryontiktok
