This is how we made our reclaimed brick paver patio 🧱🌱☀️ 🌱 Dug out the area where we wanted our patio to be. We needed to dig down because the level is eventually built back up with ballast, sand, mortar and bricks and we wanted the finished patio to be level with the existing garden. 🌱 Added a layer of ballast which we compacted with a wacker plate. 🌱 Later of sand. It was important for the sand to be level as this is what were laying our bricks onto. We knocked a post into the ground to the level we wanted the sand to come to (about 30mm above the ballast) and used a spirit level to knock a few more posts in around the patio area to the same level. This gave us an initial height to work towards with the sand. We then filled in the sand, and raked it over to get it roughly flat. Then we went over with a spirit level to get it properly level and flat. We used a wacker plate to compact the sand and went over again with the spirit level, repeating a few times until we were happy we had a flat surface. 🌱 Put in a string line, using a square to make sure the corners were at 90 degrees. 🌱 Laid out the bricks in a double basket weave pattern. We started out using spacers but because the bricks are old and uneven we found they weren’t really doing anything so we stopped using them. 🌱 Mortar the edges. We decided to only mortar in the outer edge of the patio as this should be sufficient to hold everything in place. We’ve used a hydraulic lime mortar because it was compatible with the bricks. We mixed 1 part sand, 3 parts lime and enough water to reach the right consistency (sort of snowball consistency). We added a haunch around the edge of the bricks using the mortar to hold them in place. It’s been very cold here so we covered the mortar with some sheeting to protect it from frost. 🌱 Finally, we brushed kiln-dried and into the cracks between the bricks, and went over it with the wacker plate (with a rubber base added) to firm everything in. #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign #spreadsheets
