Jordan Mailata had never played a single down of American football when an NFL team drafted him. He grew up in Bankstown, outside Sydney, the son of Samoan immigrants, playing rugby league. Today he is a Super Bowl champion left tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2014 he fainted at preseason training and needed surgery on his heart. He was out of rugby for more than a year, and his weight reportedly went from about 324 pounds to about 366. The South Sydney Rabbitohs offered him a reserve grade contract, with his weight reportedly a big part of the conversation. He turned it down. NFL executives watched video of him playing rugby and invited him to the league’s International Player Pathway program. He went to Florida to learn a sport he had never played. The Eagles took him 233rd overall. Only the second player ever drafted who had never played American high school or college football. Then, for two years, nothing. A stress fracture in his back cost him his rookie year. He missed almost all of the next one too. Then came the first start. Then the starting left tackle job. Then $64 million, and later $66 million more. He started a Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs and lost it, 38 to 35. Two years later he got the rematch. The Eagles won 40 to 22. He also sings. He was Thingamabob on The Masked Singer, and his three Christmas albums with Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson raised more than $10 million for charity. This year he and his wife Niki started a foundation that gives Philadelphia teenagers scholarships and mentors. Her motto for it: “talent is everywhere. Opportunity is not.” A teenager had heart surgery, came back heavier, and turned down a reserve grade rugby contract. He learned a game he had never played, got taken 233rd, and waited two years for his first start. He has a ring. #nfl #eagles #eaglesfootball #jordanmailata #philadelphiaeagles
