@dailymailau: The outbreak was detected on October 9 after travellers on flight QF5 from Perth to Rome reported being bitten by bugs mid-flight. Passengers were given antihistamines on medical advice. However, the plane reportedly ran out of the medication. Qantas was then forced to cancel the return flight from Rome to Perth on Saturday, with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner taken out of service for a deep clean and fumigation. People pick these bed bugs up from dirty motel rooms. The bugs end up in suitcases and hand bags that people take on board flights. They are very hard to kill because they have a hard shell that protects them from some insecticides. Also like many bugs today they have become resistant to certain insecticides. Even if it’s a five star motel room you can still have bed bugs in the mattress. The only way to prevent them is to keep a really clean uncluttered environment. Letting sunlight in prevents them because they hate sunlight. If they are in your luggage you may have to throw the contents out. They can live in people’s clothing that’s why it’s hygienic to keep a distance from people. They are night creatures so the people on the flight most probably got bitten at night.
