Cevri Kalfa Staircase — The Staircase That Saved a Sultan The Cevri Kalfa Staircase is located inside the Imperial Harem of Topkapı Palace, along the famous Golden Way (Altın Yol). But these ordinary-looking stone steps witnessed one of the most dramatic moments in Ottoman history. In 1808, during the turmoil that followed the deposition and killing of Sultan Selim III, the rebels entered the Harem searching for his young cousin, Şehzade Mahmud, intending to kill him as well. Cevri Kalfa, a courageous woman of the Imperial Harem, managed to reach the young prince and hide him in her apartment. When the rebels discovered where he was, they rushed toward the staircase. Cevri Kalfa then made a desperate and extraordinary decision. She grabbed a container filled with hot ashes and threw the ashes directly into the faces of the approaching attackers. The confusion and pain gave the palace guards precious moments to help Şehzade Mahmud escape through the roof. Cevri Kalfa was eventually attacked and knocked down, but her bravery bought enough time for the prince to survive. Shortly afterwards, Alemdar Mustafa Pasha and his forces reached the palace, and Şehzade Mahmud was saved. He would later become Sultan Mahmud II, one of the most important reforming sultans of the Ottoman Empire. After ascending the throne, Mahmud II never forgot the woman who had saved his life. He rewarded Cevri Kalfa by appointing her Hazinedar Usta, one of the highest-ranking positions within the Imperial Harem. He also commissioned the Cevri Kalfa Primary School in Istanbul in her memory. ✨ Today, these quiet stone steps inside Topkapı Palace carry the name of the woman whose courage helped save the future Sultan Mahmud II.
