Former #Mets hitting coach Kevin Long and Cubs assistant hitting coach John Mallee are among the candidates being interviewed for the Mets’ open hitting coach position, according to recent reports from MLB.com and the NY Post. Earlier this week, Mike Puma of the NY Post reported that the Mets interviewed Long on Tuesday for a possible return as their hitting coach. Long, who served as the Mets’ hitting coach for 3 seasons from 2015-2017, was just let go by the Phillies after being their hitting coach over the last 5 seasons. While Long was Philadelphia’s hitting coach from 2022-2026, he led them to the 7th most runs scored in MLB, 4th best batting average (.253), 4th most RBIs, 4th highest OPS (.744) and 14th in offensive fWAR. Also among the Mets’ candidates for their open position is Cubs assistant hitting coach John Mallee, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Mallee, 57, was previously head hitting coach for the Astros (2013-14), Cubs (2015-2017) and Phillies (2018-19). Over the last 3 seasons, Mallee has been the Cubs’ assistant hitting coach under Dustin Kelly. Under Mallee and Kelly in 2024-2026, the Cubs have ranked 5th among all MLB teams in runs scored, 4th in OPS and 1st in offensive fWAR. Mallee is also said to be close with Pete Crow Armstrong, and helped him develop from an unproven rookie to a NL MVP candidate over the last 3 years in Chicago. After finishing 20th in runs scored this season, the Mets parted ways with director of hitting Jeff Albert but retained hitting coach Troy Snitker. The Mets are now looking for someone to replace Albert, although they’re not sure if they’ll hire a new hitting director over Snitker or another assistant under him, per DiComo.
