@stdbox2: He had a romance with a woman who would later become one of the most famous Christian authors: Stormie Omartian. Long before Steve Martin was the “wild and crazy guy” in the white suit or the beloved father figure in movies, he was a young man working at Knott’s Berry Farm, trying to find his footing in show business. It was there, amidst the stage lights of the Bird Cage Theatre in the early 1960s, that he met Stormie. This wasn’t just a casual date; it was a relationship that would fundamentally rewrite the script of his life. At eighteen years old, Steve was still figuring out who he was. In his memoir, Born Standing Up, he looks back at Stormie with incredible tenderness. He admits that he was a bit of a late bloomer and that Stormie was his first real love. The bond they shared was so intense that he was willing to follow her lead on almost anything. “If Stormie had said I would look good in a burgundy ball gown, I would have gone out and bought a burgundy ball gown.” This quote shows just how devoted he was to her and how much he admired her personality and intelligence. Their relationship was more than a typical young romance; it helped Steve grow intellectually. Stormie encouraged him to think more deeply about life. She introduced him to poetry, challenging books, and big philosophical ideas. Because of her, Steve decided to major in philosophy at California State University, Long Beach, and took classes like logic and metaphysics. It’s interesting that the unusual comedy Steve became known for was shaped by the logic and philosophy he learned thanks to Stormie. He said she “reconfigur[ed] his thinking” in a way that lasted his whole life. They even talked about a future together, imagining getting married in a “lilac-covered dale,” which sounded like something out of a fairytale. But as they got older, their lives started to go in different directions. Stormie transferred to UCLA, and the distance, both physical and emotional, started to affect their relationship. Steve called the change “painful,” and eventually, they decided to break up. They both went on to achieve incredible things, though in very different worlds. Steve Martin became a comedy legend, an Oscar-winning actor, and a celebrated banjo player. Stormie Omartian faced her own personal struggles and eventually found a deep, transformative faith. She married musician Michael Omartian and became a literary powerhouse, writing The Power of a Praying Wife and selling over 28 million books worldwide. Even though they lived very different lives, the respect remained. When Steve wrote about her decades later, he did so with kindness, acknowledging the parts of her difficult childhood that he hadn’t fully understood when they were together. Our first loves might not be the person we grow old with, but they are often the person who teaches us how to think, how to dream, and how to see the world differently. We should cherish those who open our minds, even if they only stay for a season. >We Are Human Angels< Authors Awakening the Human Spirit We are the authors of 'We Are Human Angels,' the book that has spread a new vision of the human experience and has been spontaneously translated into 14 languages by readers.
